Math Lab

The mathematics laboratory is a place where anybody can experiment and explore patterns and ideas. At Advaith’s Math Lab, you will find collection of games, puzzles, and other teaching and learning materials. The materials are student self-driven as well as guided by teachers to explore, discover, learn and develop the world of Mathematics. The activities create interest among students to explore, and test some of their ideas, beliefs and hypothesis around Math. Advaith’s Math lab is appealing students of different ages and varying mathematical proficiency. While the initial appeal is broad-based, the level of engagement of different individuals may vary. The activities are intended to give our students an experience of enjoying and embracing mathematics and not merely for the purpose of demonstration.

The Maths lab at Advaith provides an opportunity for students to discover mathematics through hands-on-experiment. Many of the activities present a problem or a challenge, with the possibility of generating further challenges and problems and igniting curiosity. The activities help students to visualize, manipulate and reason out. They provide opportunity to make conjectures and test them, and to generalize observed patterns. They create a context for students to attempt to prove their conjectures.

Materials and equipment at our Mathematics laboratory :

Our math lab contain materials such as beads, pebbles, sticks, ball, frames, balance, weights measuring tape, and pin board graph paper among others which are helpful for demonstrating elementary mathematical concepts.
Angle mirrors are used for various purposes such as to derive angular distance, angle of elevation and depression, height of the object and the width of the river.
Similar to other classrooms and labs, Math lab has it’s dedicated projector to screen videos related to Math that will aid students’ learning. Movies of great Mathematicians and significant part of our lives where Mathematics play vital role are casted on screen to help students understand the importance.
Math lab work involves the important activity of weighing and measuring. The four instruments used for measuring and weighing such as measuring tape, balance of different types, measuring jar and graduated cylinder are essentially needed.
At Advaith’s Math Laboratory, students are required to draw and sketch geometrical figures, graphs among others. There are sets of drawing instruments like compass, rulers, protractors etc. Teachers demonstrate the drawing on the blackboard and instrument bones for the students use. Stencils are used for drawing geometrical figures which is an important tool in a mathematical laboratory.
Blackboard helps our teachers in writing down instructions, drawing geometrical figures, key points, formulas, illustration and other details necessary for performing laboratory work.
A Math lab is not complete without a Bulletin board. There’s a bulletin board in our mathematical laboratory to display various illustrations concerning mathematics. Information related to mathematics and its application are collected from different sources like magazines , journals and newspapers are displayed to inspire our students.
Various mathematical models which offer opportunities to students to explore and investigate are placed in our lab.
Pictures and charts depicting different mathematical concepts are installed. We have pictures depicting various mathematicians who’ve made contributions along with historical applications (in monuments and daily life) to inspire students.

At Advaith School in Hosur, our Math teachers play a vital role as facilitators than as teachers. There is a need of strategies for teaching mathematics in a Math lab atmosphere that transforms the position of the teacher from being active speaker to a facilitator.

The conceptual understanding will better enable students to handle logical and complex information throughout their lives.
