Special Education

Advaith Special education is tailored to meet the needs of students with different abilities. The service and support a child receive in Advaith special education is different from what another child receives. It’s all about individualization. What’s important is giving kids the resources, care and support they need to make progress in our school. Special education is the practice of educating students in a way that addresses their individual differences and special needs. Ideally, this process involves the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials, and accessible settings. These interventions are designed to help individuals with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self-sufficiency and success in school. Special education is designed specifically for students with learning disabilities and Advaith School in Hosur values and has a special place in our hearts for students who are differently abled.

Special education today is still focused on helping children with disabilities learn. But this no longer has to mean placing kids in a special classroom all day long. In fact, CBSE insists students who receive special education services to be taught alongside their non-disabled peers only. “Special education refers to a range of services that can be provided in different ways and in different settings. “There is no “one size fits all” approach to special education. It’s tailored to meet each student’s needs. Special education refers to a range of services that can be provided in different ways and in different settings. Advaith special education program is customized to address each student’s needs. Our teachers provide a continuum of services, in which students with various disabilities receive multiple degrees of support based on their individual needs. It is crucial for special education programs to be individualized so that they address the unique combination of needs in a given student.

We practice inclusive approaches at Advaith in which students with special needs spend all, or most of the school day with students who do not have special needs. CBSE also says that students with learning disabilities should be educated alongside their non-disabled peers “to the maximum extent possible.”

The student can be taught in either a classroom or outside environment. Both environments can be interactive for the student to engage better with the subject. Different instructional techniques are used for some students with special educational needs. Instructional strategies are classified as being either accommodations or modifications. Accommodations such as seating the student near the teacher (and far from distractions) or allowing him to give oral reports instead of writing essays is permitted. Modifications such as reducing the amount of homework, provide simple mind maps and graphic organizers to simplify the learning content, Skipping subjects, extra aids, additional time etc. for better understanding is allowed.

We use many strategies to help students receiving special education services succeed in general education settings. One such strategy is Individualized Education Program (IEP) which suites the need of the student. An Individualized Education Program is planned based on the need and requirement of the student. The IEP is often described as the cornerstone of special education. That’s because this legally binding document details a student’s annual learning goals as well as the special services and supports the school will provide to help him meet those goals.

Advaith also followed remedial teaching for slow learners. This is an alternate approach for the regular classroom teacher in instructing the slow learner. Remedial teaching is the use of activities, techniques and practices to eliminate weaknesses or deficiencies that the slow learner is known to have. Here teachers design appropriate teaching plan to stimulate effective learning and design different learning activities with same teaching objectives. The plan includes simple teaching activities, real examples before proceeding to abstract concepts, simple and easy steps, more frequent use of teaching aids, games and activities etc. Teachers also carefully observe the performances of kids and give them appropriate assistance, feedback and encouragement so as to help them acquire the learning skills, solve their problems and understand their own capability, thus enhancing self-confidence and improving their learning skills.

It is possible to draw strong academic performance from slow learners and children with special needs through steady application of practical strategies. Joint efforts of both parents and teachers are important to achieve positive results. Knowledge of what we can do as a parent or teacher to help these children enables us to put in our best efforts in the right direction and contribute to the children’s success in later years.

At Advaith, every child and his/her soul are special and a sacred gift to us. We recognize the uniqueness in every child, embrace and value them.
